Driving with the sun shining in your face or beating down on your body can be uncomfortable and sometimes even dangerous. One way to alleviate some of these issues is by getting your windows tinted. However, there are a few rules regarding window tinting.
Here in North Carolina if you get your windows tinted, different rules apply to different types of vehicles. If you drive a sedan the rear and side windows can be tinted, but the windows have to allow in more than 35 percent of the light. With an SUV or van, this restriction only applies to the front side windows. Any darkness can be used on the rear windows.
Another aspect of tinting windows is reflective coatings. Just like you see in some sunglasses, some tinting film uses metallic surfaces to help reflect sunlight. In North Carolina, no matter what kind of vehicle you drive, the tinting cannot be more than 20 percent reflective, regardless of which window it is on.
Along with helping to shield you and your passengers from the sun, there are additional benefits to window tinting such as privacy, security, UV protection, keeping your interior cooler, and protecting your interior from sun damage.
