How Alternators Work

alternator

The alternator is one of the most important parts of your car, since it’s the part that generates electricity to keep your battery charged as you drive. If you’ve ever wondered how they do this, we here at Larry Jay Mitsubishi have created a brief guide on how alternators work.

Alternators contain several parts, including a rotor, a stator, a rectifier assembly, and a set of brushes that maintain contact with the rotor, all of which are housed inside an aluminum casing. There’s also a pulley outside the casing.

The word alternator comes from the phrase alternating current. The rotor and stator work together to produce electromagnetic power, which is then sent to the battery. The engine rotates the alternator pulley, which causes the rotor to spin past wire coils that are part of the stator. This produces alternating currents in the rotor and stator. The electricity from this is funneled through stator leads to the rectifier diodes, which send the current in the proper direction.

Alternators also require a voltage regulator that determines the amount of voltage that goes into the engine, since too much can damage it. This isn’t everything there is to know about the alternator, so read up if you’re interested!

How To Handle A Backseat Driver

how to handle a backseat driver

We’ve all experienced it. We are driving down the road—and doing a good job of it—when someone in the backseat leans forward to offer some unsolicited advice. While your passenger might mean well, the advice itself is typically unwanted—and distracted.

Backseat driving is a well-recognized phenomenon and has even attracted the attention of psychologists. According to Psychology Today, the need to “backseat drive” finds its source in a positive personality trait—namely, confidence. But it’s more than that. It’s about the confidence you have the power and the knowledge to help, “that you’re capable enough to influence any situation for the better.”

Recognizing that backseat drivers are really only trying to help can make it easier to deal with them. That idea can be a great way to dialogue with them. Try explaining to them that you know they are only trying to help but in reality, from your perspective, they are hurting the situation by making you doubt yourself.

Your driving experience is going to be significantly easier if you know how to handle a backseat driver. Make sure you keep this in mind the next time you have a backseat driver! Check out our new inventory today and decide which vehicle is best in preventing backseat drivers!

2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Tops Cars.com List of Most Affordable Three-Row Crossovers

most affordable three-row crossovers

2016 Mitsubishi Outlander

The crossover segment is not only popular—it’s crowded. There’s no mystery as to why the crossover has become the most popular segment. They work when a minivan or full-size SUV would be too bulky or inefficient and when a car would be too small. Because the crossover segment is so popular, it comes as no surprise that every year, Cars.com announces its Most Affordable Three-Row Crossover list, naming the best of the best in the segment. This year, the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander has come out on top.

The list is determined based on the characteristics consumers look for in a three-row crossover. These characteristics include an automatic transmission, power driver’s seat, rearview camera, USB port, and Bluetooth connectivity. Then, the crossover’s affordability is calculated by an equation involving the five-year fuel cost, price, and residual value.

Cars.com found that the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander met all of the requirements to be the year’s Most Affordable Three-Row Crossover. The estimated five-year fuel cost for the Outlander was $2,000 less than the next competitor on the list. Though its residual was not as strong as some, the fuel cost and a low starting price helped the Outlander to win.

Tips to Take Care of Your Car’s A/C

take care of your car’s a/c

As you gaze out into the hot summer from your cool and comfortable car, take a few minutes to say thank you to your air conditioning. We know you don’t want your A/C to fail, so here are a few tips on how to take care of your car’s A/C.

  • Turn it on. This is the simplest way to prolong the life of your air conditioner. Simply by using it, you are keeping the compressor in good working order. Auto experts recommend you turn on your air conditioning on its coldest setting for 10 minutes every week—even in the winter. Not only will this keep the parts working, but it will help clear out any excess moisture from your car’s vents.
  • Have it serviced. Usually every two years, your air conditioner will need a refresh—which entails re-gassing and cleaning up the system.
  • Give it a break. While using your A/C will keep it working, using it too much may cause it to break down. Try relying more on the fan speed instead of a colder temperature to keep you cool. If it’s blazingly hot and you’re trying to turn your car into a freezer, you are making your car work really hard.

If you think your car’s air conditioning might need a bit of a pick-me-up, give the service department at Larry Jay Mitsubishi a call and we’ll make sure you stay cool this summer.

5 Ways to Cut Your Commuting Costs

cut your commuting costs

Driving to work can sometimes take forever. Weaving in and out of city traffic is enough to make even the most relaxed person stressed out. Not only is it frustrating, but it can also be expensive. At Larry Jay Mitsubishi, we understand your pain. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of five ways you can cut your commuting costs.

  1. Find the Best Gas Prices

No one likes paying for gas, but if you’re going to drive anywhere, it’s something you’re going to have to do. So why pay more than you have to? Use apps like GasBuddy to find the cheapest gas in your area.

  1. Carpool with a Co-Worker

Got a friend at work? Consider setting up a carpool together. Taking one vehicle will save you both a lot more money than taking separate vehicles. Plus, it will give you a chance to converse with one another.

  1. Use Mass Transit

Sometimes city bus or train systems can take longer to get to work than taking a car. But in the long run, they are much less expensive. By taking a bus or train to work, you end up saving a lot of money.

  1. Bike to Work

If you live in the city, there’s no need to drive through heavy city traffic—bike to work instead. Not only will you get there faster, but you will also be getting healthier by exercising.

  1. Work Remotely

If your job offers you the opportunity to work from home, seize it. Working remotely will allow you to get your job done in the comforts of your own home. You won’t even have to drive to work at all!

Whether you bike, bus, or buddy up, there are plenty of ways to make that annoying and expensive commute a little more tolerable—and perhaps even enjoyable.
