What is a Vehicle’s Trim Level?

Vehicle's Trim Level - Larry Jay BlogFinding the vehicle you want is difficult enough, and adding in multiple trim levels to choose from doesn’t make it any easier. Different trims come with different options, but it doesn’t have to be confusing. Here’s a quick breakdown of the meaning behind a vehicle’s trim level.

Vehicles are generally available in a selection of trim levels, each of which builds on the base model. Upper-tier models might include more technology, better performance, higher efficiency, or come equipped with different packages. Take the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander for example.

The 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander features four trim levels. The Outlander ES 2.4 is the base model and features a standard seven-inch touchscreen, rearview camera, four-cylinder engine, front-wheel drive, and Bluetooth® connectivity. The base model is followed by the SE 2.4 and SEL 2.4, both of which build on the features of the ES 2.4.

At the top of the range sits the Outlander GT 3.0 AWC. This top-spec trim comes standard with a V6 engine, multi-view camera system, more advanced safety technologies, and paddle shifters.

That trim level hierarchy remains the same throughout the Mitsubishi lineup. The ES will always serve as the base model, followed by the SE, then SEL, then the top-spec GT trims.

Other automakers follow a similar trim hierarchy. Honda, for example, always starts with an LX base model. Meanwhile, Chevrolet always starts out with an LS trim.
